Ferrari president John Elkann believes the team has the best driver line-up on the grid in Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
Leclerc took victory in Bahrain and both Scuderia drivers have finished on the podium in the first two races of the season, and currently sit as the top two in the Drivers’ Championship at this early stage – a fact which team boss Mattia Binotto admitted himself was “beyond all expectations” at the start of the year.
The team made steady progress in 2021 after a disastrous 2020 campaign, eventually overhauling McLaren to take P3 in the Constructors’ standings, and they have flown out of the blocks in Formula 1’s new era, with Leclerc and Sainz showing themselves to be closely matched in the driving stakes.
Leclerc has held the upper hand at the start of this season, but Sainz pipped his team-mate over the course of the season as a whole last year, setting up a mouth-watering battle between the two this year.
The Ferrari president is pleased with the start the pair have made to the 2022 campaign, and hopes to see them build on the Scuderia’ recovery from last year.
