Fernando Alonso: Two or three more years at least the aim in F1

Alpine driver Fernando Alonso says that he hopes for at least two or three more years in Formula 1, with him joining Aston Martin for the 2023 campaign.

The veteran Spaniard has once again put in a number of fine drives this season for Alpine, underlining his remaining talent behind the wheel.

Indeed, he is a driver that simply does not appear to be feeling his age and, in many ways, he might well be at the very peak of his powers.

He needs to try and find a team that can help him challenge right at the front, then, and it appears he feels Aston is the best option available to him to do that in the coming seasons, with him saying that he could see himself remaining on the grid for three years if all goes to plan.

Speaking to DAZN, he explained the ambition of Aston was what drew him away from Alpine:

“It was because of the desire I saw on the part of Aston Martin to have me.

“Perhaps that was missing with Alpine. Or the signs of affection that perhaps I did not have here.

“Alpine had Piastri, the young talent from the academy, and I was also going to a project that seemed more ambitious than Alpine’s.

“I hope to be in Formula 1 for at least two or three more years. I think I am still at 100 percent. And then, from there, a challenge that I have never hidden is to try the Dakar again.”

Aston have made great strides in terms of putting together a new factory and it is clear they have huge financial backing as well.

They’re not quite there yet in terms of fighting at the front but the plans they have been enough to draw in Fernando Alonso and that speaks volumes.

We’ll see what the next three years have in store for the two-time world champion.
