Fans on social media react as Newcastle eye St. Juste to solve defensive crisis

Newcastle United kept their second clean sheet of the season in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Leeds United and have conceded one or less goals in their last three Premier League games, but Eddie Howe still wants a defender before the January transfer window shuts.

The Magpies have been much improved of late, but they’re still 18th in the league for most shots faced (15.7 per game) and 19th for goals conceded (43), so an upgrade on the likes Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles might be warranted.

Sky Germany say Newcastle are keen on signing Jeremiah St. Juste and hope to get a deal done in the coming days. The 25-year-old has been a regular for FSV Mainz 05 when fit and fans on social media are open to signing him. Most are desperate to get one defender over the line given the club’s poor record this season.

St. Juste joined Mainz on a four-year deal from Feyenoord and has gone on to make 69 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals with three assists. He’s 6ft 1 and has won 60% of his aerial duels in the Bundesliga this season.

The Dutchman has been dribbled past just once while averaging a tackle (13) or interception (14) every 22 minutes, so he might be a good acquisition.
