Fans on social media react as Aston Villa suffer transfer blow with Joe Gomez

Aston Villa have Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Tyrone Mings at centre-back but have a lack of depth after Axel Tuanzebe cut his loan deal short, so Steven Gerrard is expected to bring in another defender before the January transfer window closes.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez was on Villa’s radar and could have been a clever acquisition after falling down the pecking order at Anfield, but Football Insider say the 24-year-old won’t be leaving the Reds this month. Fans on social media aren’t convinced Liverpool will let him go and don’t think Gomez will settle for being on the bench.

Misha Mushood MiguelAVFC: “Being linked with Gomez again. Be surprised if this happens.”

Matthew Reed: “It’s not gonna happen. Liverpool are not gonna sell him.”

Neal Lincoln: “Who is he going to replace to get the much needed game time?”

Steve Wright: “Not a chance (he’ll be offloaded) after last year’s lack of back up.”

Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and has gone on to make 133 appearances in all competitions, notching four assists. The England international, who has represented his country on 11 occasions, has struggled for playing time this season as he’s fallen down the pecking order.

Gomez has made just 12/35 appearances across the board, amassing 440 minutes of playing time from a possible 3150. The 24-year-old finds himself behind Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté and Joel Matip, so reports suggested he’d be loaned out to get regular football.

That doesn’t appear to be on the cards now, however, so Villa will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
