Fan arrested at Man City vs Man United for 'mocking Munich air disaster'

A man was arrested after a Manchester City fan was reportedly seen 'mocking the Munich air disaster' at the derby on Sunday (March 3).

The football fan, who attended the anticipated match between Manchester City and Manchester United, could be seen in the stand appearing to make plane gestures with his arms.

It is understood that police later intervened after he was thought to have been mocking the Munich air disaster of 1958, in which a plane carrying members of the Manchester United team crashed on its third attempt to take off at Munich-Riem Airport in Munich, West Germany.

Videos were quickly shared across social media, which some branded 'horrendous' and 'vile'. Afterwards, another clip appeared to show officers at the stadium intervening.

Greater Manchester Police have since confirmed the man was arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting after concerns were raised by others in the crowds.

The Manchester Evening News understands Manchester City are aware of the incident involving the fan, who was making 'tragedy-related gestures' and that the club issue stadium bans if people are identified, in line with their sanctions and bans policy.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "During the Manchester derby, officers arrested a man on suspicion of tragedy chanting. Following reports made in the crowd, the man was promptly arrested by our officers."
