Falcao, Sneijder and the other superstars Aston Villa tried to sign

Aston Villa have had plenty of top class footballers of their own - but they've also missed out on plenty!

Looking back through the transfer window archives always seems to crop up various extravagant names that didn't quite come to fruition and Villa seem to have had lots of those.

In fact, with the names we've dug out, you could probably create an outstanding XI, albeit a very, very attacking one that would rely on one solitary defender - and even he's not known for his stopping qualities.

So, let's kick it off! Here are some of the players that Villa didn't quite manage to snare...

Paul Lambert wanted to sign the now Barcelona hitman upon arriving at Villa Park and confirmed the negotiations with the player's representatives during an interview.

"I actually spoke to an agent from France about (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang. He was at St Etienne and we made contact," said Lambert.

Lukaku was another option at the time Lambert arrived. The striker's name was making waves around Europe due to his stunning displays for Anderlecht but Chelsea completed a big money deal instead.

During the same interview, Lambert revealed his interest in the Belgian.

"I knew that the club needed big players to come in and we couldn't go and get them. I remember speaking to (Romelu) Lukaku when I first went there.

"It was players like that that I wanted to try and bring in but we were never going to get them. It is a brilliant club but I always think a team that has won the European Cup should not be in the position it is in."

Villa's search for a striker in the 2008/09 season saw them take a look at Newcastle United's Michael Owen. O'Neill wanted competition for regular first team duo Gabby Agbonlahor and John Carew and saw Owen as a realistic
