Failings of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's £50m man open door for Manchester United summer upgrade

Manchester United's main targets this summer are expected to be a defensive midfielder and a striker but this season has made clear that there are a number of other positions that need to be strengthened.

In the first instalment of our transfer breakdown series, we looked at the goalkeeper position and how, if Dean Henderson were to leave in summer, United would need to find a long term heir to David de Gea instead of settling for another older backup.

Now we are going to take a look at right-back, which in late January MEN Sport stated was one of the main positions United would be looking to strengthen.

Let's take a look at what the situation is, what profile is needed to solve the problem and who United could target.

The Situation

You've probably heard this line hundreds of times by now: United scouted 804 right-backs and ended up signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka. While the English defender looked promising in his first two seasons with the club, now the squad is looking to transition to a more possession-based style of play, he seems out of place.

This is poor planning on United's part as it was the natural progression of the side, but it is now something they must address.

Diogo Dalot has been impressive in his games under Ralf Rangnick, though there are still areas he must improve, so providing him with competition seems the most reasonable choice in the summer window. They should be a player who is able to affect the game in an attacking sense.

The Profile

A few years ago if you said United should 'do an Arsenal' you'd have been laughed out of your respective pub or off of Twitter, but in 2022 that statement holds a lot of weight, especially in solving a lot of issues on a smaller budget.
