Facundo Pellistri reveals why he was taken off 13 minutes after coming on for Manchester United vs Atletico

Facundo Pellistri has revealed he was taken off 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the 1-0 friendly loss to Atletico in Norway due to a twisted ankle.

The attacker replaced Anthony Elanga on 76 minutes but was forced off a little while later after suffering the knock. The 20-year-old played just 45 minutes in the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, scoring in the 4-0 win over Liverpool in Bangkok.

Pellistri, who arrived from Uruguayan outfit Penarol for £8m in 2020, had a frustrating loan spell at Alaves last season. After failing to impress in the first half of the season despite regular starts, the winger played just 76 competitive minutes of football in 2022.

However, the youngster could be on the plane to the Qatar World Cup with Uruguay having featured in June’s internationals, taking his number of caps up to six. That said, it is unlikely he will edge his way into Ten Hag’s United plans next season.

Taking to Twitter after the full-time whistle in Oslo, Pellistri said: “I'm fine! I twisted my ankle, a real pity I couldn’t finish the match! Come on @ManUtd.”
