Fabio Silva lands Celtic 'dive' charge but Rangers star cleared of key sin amid penalty storm

Peter Grant admits he has sympathy for John Beaton despite Celtic being punished with a penalty - as he accused Rangers star Fabio Silva of "diving all over the place."

The Portuguese forward has been subject to criticism following his derby day performance during the 3-3 thriller. Several pundits and fans have criticised the Wolves loanee for his reaction to Johnston's tackle in the first half at Ibrox after the Celtic star blocked his path - which landed the Canada international a booking.

But things would get worse for Johnston as Silva went down in the box following a challenge from the right-back. Referee Beaton booked the Rangers star for simulation - but would reverse his call following a VAR check. James Tavernier stepped up to find the net and kickstart the Light Blues' fight-back from 2-0 down to draw the Old Firm derby 3-3 and keep the difference at the top of the Scottish Premiership at one point.

But Grant didn't hold back when discussing Silva on BBC Sportscene - even though he conceded that whistler Beaton got the call RIGHT to award the penalty to the home side. He said: "At first I thought it was a penalty. Then when you see the replays and that he got the touch (on the ball) I was starting to question it, but you see the second touch (on Silva) and you can see why he has given it.

"But, I felt for John Beaton. Silva had been diving around all over the place and we have got to give credit to referees at times, because he was put under so much pressure. He (Silva) was rolling about for nothing. Ok, the one with Johnston is a booking but you have got to have players who say to the others to have respect. You can't do that. That is not part of the Scottish game."
