FA Trophy second-round round-up as history-making Sittingbourne win on penalties at Winchester City but Chatham Town, Folkestone Invicta, Maidstone United, Tonbridge Angels and Welling United lose
History-making Sittingbourne progressed to the FA Trophy third round on Saturday.
Ryan Maxwell’s promotion-chasing Isthmian South East team, at Southern League Premier Division South side Winchester City, trailed at half-time.
But they made it 1-1 as the prolific forward Mitchell May converted a penalty on 81 minutes before three players were red-carded - home defender Dan Bradshaw and captain Jamie Barron, with May himself dismissed for the Brickies.
Sittingbourne came out on top 5-4 in the shootout, though, in front of a crowd of 463 to pocket £3,750 in prize money.
Isthmian Premier Chatham were beaten on penalties after a 1-1 draw at National League South Slough.
Midfielder Jordy Mongoy put Kevin Hake’s troops ahead in the first period and, although they lost forward Jamie Yila to a red card just before the hour, it was 10 men apiece on 78 minutes when ex-Herne Bay defender Lexus Beeden was given his marching orders.
But Slough found an injury-time equaliser before they won the shootout 4-2.
Two second-half strikes consigned Folkestone to a 2-0 defeat at home to Hanwell Town.
Maidstone limped out of the FA Trophy at lower-league Horsham.
They trailed to a Daniel Ajakaiye goal after two minutes and Reece Myles-Meekums doubled the Isthmian Premier side’s lead in the second half.
Defender Ben Brookes scored a late penalty for the visitors but it’s Horsham who progress to round three, winning 2-1.
A late goal consigned Tonbridge to a 1-0 defeat at Gosport.
Fellow National League South side, Welling, are also out, as they went down 2-1 at home to Havant & Waterlooville.
Trailing 2-0, Alex Lankshear rose highest to nod in late to keep the tie alive but the Wings’ fightback came too late.
