FA charge Wolves chief after angry tunnel row over controversial Man City winning goal

Wolves' disciplinary woes following their late defeat to Manchester City continue, as it has emerged that their sporting director was involved in an incident with the referee at Molineux on Sunday.

City needed a 95th-minute winner from John Stones to edge past a stubborn Wolves side at the weekend, with the goal initially ruled out for offside as it passed Bernardo Silva, who was stood close to goalkeeper Jose Sa.

But after an on-field VAR review, the officials correctly determined that Bernardo had got out of the way in good time and was not impeding Sa's ability to save Stones' header. Despite angry protestations from Wolves fans and some players, City left Molineux with the three points.

Now, it has emerged that Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs allegedly confronted the match officials in the tunnel following the full time whistle - with the FA moving to charge him with misconduct for 'acting in an improper manner' and using 'abusive words' towards the referees.

An FA statement read: "Wolverhampton Wanderers' sporting director has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday, 20 October. Matt Hobbs allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive words towards the match official/s around the tunnel area after the final whistle."

The development comes after the FA contacted Wolves boss Gary O'Neil to clarify his comments made in his post-match press conference that officials may subconsciously favour bigger clubs like City over smaller clubs like Wolves.
