F1: Martin Brundle gives verdict on FIA cost cap rulings

Martin Brundle has given his view on the recent FIA findings that say Red Bull and Aston Martin have fallen foul of the 2021 budget cap rules.

News broke on Monday afternoon that two teams had breached the regulations, with Red Bull’s a minor overspend and a procedural and Aston Martin’s just a procedural.

This, of course, came after a few weeks of speculation that there would be a couple of teams facing potential sanctions, though Christian Horner was quick to defend Red Bull and say that they felt they were under the cap.

Indeed, after the FIA’s statement, Red Bull again reiterated their belief they were innocent and so we will have to wait and see as to what next steps are taken both by them and the FIA, with this story set to rumble on for a while yet.

Brundle offered his take on the situation speaking to Any Driven Monday on Sky, meanwhile, saying that there needs to be complete rigidness with the rules and total transparency:

“What seems absolutely crazy to me is that a minor breach can be up to five percent overspend on the cost cap.

“That is $7m and we know that is a massive upgrade on a car, maybe even a B-spec for some teams.

“So, that needs tightening up for starters, because what is the point in having $145m and then having this five percent variant?

“Other teams are saying, ‘this gives you a head start into 2022, the car is carried over to 2023 so this is a big advantage’.”

“It’s not, it appears, the great crime we were being told by other team principals in Singapore. We now await the news.
