F1 drops plans to increase number of sprint races in 2022 - report
The FIA has informed Formula One team bosses there will only be three sprint races in the 2022 campaign, according to reports in Germany.
Six sprint races were planned for 2022, but those plans have been scaled back following stiff opposition from a handful of F1 teams.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown previously revealed that an unnamed team had requested a budget cap increase of $5m to cover the added costs related to the expanded sprint race schedule.OPINION | Why F1 will forever ignore sprint race criticism
"A couple of teams, and one team, in particular, wanted a $5m budget cap increase, which was just ridiculous," Brown said.
And, according to Auto Motor und Sport, F1 bosses have been informed there will be no more than three sprint races in 2022.
F1 teams received $450 000 to cover the three sprint races in 2021, and it has been suggested that a similar arrangement will be made this year.
