'F*** off and get lost' - How Sir Alex Ferguson reacted to Man United star asking him for a 12-month holiday after falling asleep in training

His first season with Manchester United could not have gone much better. Dwight Yorke, after arriving from Aston Villa, won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in his debut campaign. Not only that, but the frontman finished as the league's top goalscorer and won the Premier League Player of the Season.

Yorke had also contributed in Europe, scoring important goals against Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Juventus. He had formed a superb partnership with Andy Cole, and the United strikeforce was one of the most feared in world football. They complemented each other perfectly.

Given how well he began his career at Old Trafford, very few people were surprised with how well the striker performed in the following campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson. The frontman was a regular member of United's 1999/200 title-winning side, contributing 23 goals in all competitions.

The striker was a popular member of the Reds' dressing room, and he was, by all accounts, liked by Ferguson. However, the pair didn't always see eye-to-eye during Yorke's time at Old Trafford - and the player experienced the 'hairdryer treatment' on more than one occasion.

It wasn't always justified, but given that Yorke fell asleep in the middle of the pitch at Sydney's Olympic Stadium during a training session, Ferguson can be forgiven for losing his temper with his star forward.

The Reds travelled to Australia as champions of Europe and England after completing the Treble during their all-conquering 1998/99 campaign. While Yorke had played an important role in United reclaiming their crown, he still wasn't protected from Ferguson's wrath.
