'F*** him, I'm signing!' - Roy Keane's furious meeting with Man United great after comical Real Madrid phone call

Roy Keane's departure from Manchester United in 2005 came in typical fashion.

The Irishman was known for his fiery temper, and very much still is during his punditry appearances, but a breakdown in his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson was one of the main contributing factors to the Reds legend leaving. Having been a key figure for United under Ferguson for many years and even his captain for most of that time, Keane's exit came as a great surprise to everyone, including the players and fans.

A typical Keane rant at his fellow United players following a 4-1 loss to Middlesbrough on the club's in-house TV channel proved to be the last straw as Keane said his teammates had been 'asked questions and they are just not coming up with the answers' as he accused those who play 'badly' of being rewarded. Just weeks later Keane unexpectedly left United by mutual consent, although he still had plenty of interest from some of Europe's top sides who were keen to land his signature.

Real Madrid even confirmed their interest in signing Keane at the time. "Roy Keane is on the list of possible signings that the club is discussing at the moment," said Madrid's director of communications Antonio García Ferreras. "But nothing has been decided as yet.

"Contrary to reports the player has not passed a medical nor will he do so in the next couple of days. What is true is that the player was offered to the club around a month ago and because of his characteristics he is the sort of player that interests the technical staff. They are going to sit down in seven or eight days and decide on who, if anyone, the club will sign when the transfer window opens."
