Experience the magic of Buxton at festival time

There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere in Buxton during the Buxton International Festival—and this year, from July 10 until July 27, the town will be alive with opera, classical music, jazz, and literary events happening all day, every day.

With over 160 events on offer, here are some of the very best events still available - don’t miss your chance to join the buzz.

1. Opera - Hamlet

Inspired by Shakespeare’s iconic play, Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet epitomises the Grand Opera tradition with breathtaking spectacle, dramatic storytelling, large casts and choruses and lush orchestration played by the Orchestra of Opera North. Gregory Feldmann sings the title role alongside international star Alastair Miles as Claudius and Yewon Han as Ophélie.

2. Opera Double Bill – Trouble in Tahiti and La voix humaine

Enjoy a captivating double bill of opera, which pairs Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti with Poulenc’s La voix humaine. Both works delve into the human psyche, examining the complexities of love, isolation and the yearning for connection.

3. Opera - Shorts

Step into the future of opera with Shorts, where four brand-new compositions come to life in one evening.

Created from scratch, BIF has commissioned seven award-winning writers and composers to create four 20-minute operas. From a 1920s scandal that rocked the queer community to ancient African healing rituals, and from twenty years of domestic drama to the impending end of the world, these operas will make your pulse race. If you see nothing else at this year’s festival, make sure you see this.

4. Books - Rev Richard Coles

Writer, broadcaster and Anglican priest, Reverend Richard Coles, brings his latest Canon Clement novel, Death on Location, to Buxton. A great
