Exeter City's 7-0 win shows transfer targets why they should join Grecians

Exeter City manager Matt Taylor is hopeful that the Grecians’ record 7-0 away win will convince prospective players to come to St James Park. Only Kegs Chauke on loan from Southampton and Jamal Blackman on a free transfer have arrived in Devon this summer.

City have been trying to recruit and bring in quality all summer – but have often missed out on targets for financial reasons. But the boss hopes that seeing what the side is doing on the pitch might be enough to convince some of his targets to put pen to paper.

Having put four past Port Vale on Saturday, it was 11 goals in the last 180 minutes for City. The seven away to Cheltenham Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night saw their biggest win since 1935 and the biggest away win ever.

Sam Nombe scored twice, with Archie Collins, Matt Jay, Jack Sparkes, Harry Kite and Josh Coley also on the scoresheet. City cruised into the second round for the first time since 2019 as they await tonight’s draw.

"If I was a footballer I'd want to come and play for this football club," Taylor said. "They get well-coached, they get fantastic opportunities, they get really well-looked after and the team plays a certain style of football. It's easy for me to say that, but we've got to put that into a recruitment process which attracts players.

“We hope it attracts them, we are still trying to sign players but it comes down to money. The offer is open to every player across the land if they are not getting the chance and thinks they can do it. We played some good football, but still want more bodies in the ground."
