Exclusive: Alex Albon discusses Williams' progress and growing in confidence this year

Alex Albon has earned the rarest of commodities in Formula 1; stability, through his performances at Williams this year.

The Thai/British driver was announced as Nicholas Latifi’s team-mate off of the back of George Russell’s move to Mercedes towards the end of last season and he’s settled in quickly, with him scoring four points for the Grove outfit thus far in 2022.

Indeed, there was little shock when news broke that Albon had earned a multi-year deal with Williams earlier this season which will see him, he’ll hope, develop even further as a driver in a team that is looking to build themselves back into one of the leading forces on the grid.

That will take time, but Albon is clearly buying into the project, with him telling Give Me Sport exclusively, before suffering appendicitis at Monza, that he has seen the signs of progress displaying themselves over the course of the year:

“We started off in Barcelona and Bahrain winter testing and it was clear that we were a little bit on the back foot with just the way that we had to invest and focus on this year, and the team was investing slightly more in infrastructure and things like that, rather than the car itself, so it wasn’t enjoyable.

“The first few races, we obviously had moments where we were okay but as you can see, throughout the year, we’ve made some great steps forward with this new package. We’ve been very good at optimising the car with strategy in qualifying and we may score points in tricky circumstances. So yeah, it’s going well.

“I mean, even if you just look very recently, at Zandvoort, it really wasn’t a track that should have suited us and we qualify P15 which was a great effort and the race pace was actually pretty strong so the progress is there.
