Exact time and where snow is set to fall in England this weekend

The latest Met Office weather map shows that large swathes of northern England are set to be hit by snow showers this weekend—just days before Christmas Day.

Forecasters have said conditions will be 'unsettled', with heavy rain and strong winds likely. A 'deep area of low pressure' will cross the far north of the UK, bringing 'disruptive' wind and rain to much of the British Isles.

National severe yellow wind warnings have already been issued for Saturday and Sunday (December 21 and 22), covering all of Scotland, most of the northwest, including Greater Manchester, and parts of Ireland and Wales.

Strong and 'prolonged' winds over the weekend, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph, are likely to cause significant delays or cancellations in transport, including on roads with buses and trains affected.

There could also be a short-term loss of power, with showers likely and some hail and thunder possible in places.

The latest maps show rain and hail affecting Kendal, Newcastle, Merseyside, and Greater Manchester by around 5pm on Saturday (December 21). A significant weather front bringing a mixture of hail and rain will affect Yorkshire as far north as Skipton down to Leeds and Sheffield.

This wet, unsettled weather is set to continue into the evening. Around 9pm, weather maps predict the northern Pennines will see the first snowfall in the north. This moves south as the evening progresses, with Kendal forecast to see snow around 10.30pm.

While wet weather continues to affect large parts of Greater Manchester and the north of England, the wintry conditions will continue to move south from Scotland over the next few hours, with snow continuing to fall in parts of the northern Pennines and Newcastle.
