Ex-Man Utd and Hull City striker caps 'unbelievable' season with crowning glory

Former Hull City striker Will Keane has enjoyed quite the turnaround in fortunes in recent times, after bagging 25 goals in 47 appearances this season to fire Wigan Athletic to promotion back to the Championship. The ex-Tiger's goal haul was enough to see him claim the League One golden boot crown, and he followed that up with the Player of the Season award at the DW Stadium.

This level of success is a far cry from the dark days of his spell at the MKM Stadium earlier in his career, a stint that was hampered by injury. In his two-and-a-half years with the Tigers, Keane made just 26 appearances with one goal to show for it before he moved on to Ipswich Town and then the Latics.

Not only has Keane guided Wigan to promotion this term, but the 29-year-old's fine form also saw him earn a first Republic of Ireland call-up, with the Stockport-born frontman making his debut against Portugal at the Aviva Stadium in November, and he says coming top of the scoring charts was his target at the beginning of the campaign in August.

"I'm really proud to get the golden boot," Keane told Wigan Today. "It's something I set out to do at the start of the season. I was quite a few behind maybe a couple of months ago, but I just kept chipping away. I always knew in this team I'd get chances, and all I had to do was get in the right areas. Quite a few of them have been tap-ins, being in the right place at the right time, but it's no coincidence.

"It's something I've been working on a lot this season, and I couldn't have done it without the rest of the lads. It's been an amazing journey, and to cap it off with the league title is unbelievable."
