Ex-Ferrari director worried about team's performance: 'Something is obviously wrong'

Former Ferrari boss Cesare Fiorio feels that current team principal Mattia Binotto won't find it easy to try and fix what is 'obviously wrong' with the Italian team.

Despite Red Bull's current dominance in the Drivers' and Constructors' standings, the Ferrari team's F1-75 has been quicker, with Charles Leclerc clinching seven of the 13 pole positions during the first half of the Formula 1 season.

But what has cost Ferrari is a mixture of reliability, strategy and driver errors, which is wrong for a team that should be winning almost every race, according to Fiorio.

Unearthing the problem

In an interview with La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Fiorio said: "Basically, you have to concede Mattia Binotto has made Ferrari a team that can win every race.

"Binotto was a great engineer, first as an engine specialist, then as [a] technical director, but his job today is very different. Something is obviously wrong at Ferrari. Mistakes are made. Binotto has to get to the bottom of it - that's his biggest challenge now."

The last time Ferrari won a world championship was the 2008 Constructors' title, which was after Michael Schumacher won five titles in a row from 2000 to 2004.

Fiorio added that Binotto now needs to find solutions to what is hindering the Maranello-based outfit from getting the success that is expected by management and the Tifosi alike.

"Mattia now has to find solutions so that the team works better," Fiorio added.

"In today's F1, everything has to work almost perfectly to win. That was different at Ferrari in the days of (Jean) Todt and Schumacher. Ferrari sometimes had such a blatantly superior car that one or the other mistake could be concealed. That's no longer possible today."
