Everton transfer news: Two escape routes involving Champions League football emerge for unwanted Andre Gomes

Andre Gomes could return to Portugal if he is to leave Everton this summer, since he is being linked with Benfica and Porto.

Gomes has been an Everton player since 2018, after he joined from Barcelona. He has made 100 appearances in all competitions since then. In the season just gone, he played 19 times.

However, despite his pedigree, Everton are ready to move on from Gomes. Injury issues have been concerning for the midfielder and Frank Lampard may want alternative reinforcements in his position, so it may be best to try his luck elsewhere.

According to the Sunday People, there are now two options for Gomes if he is to leave Everton.

It is claimed that Benfica and Porto are interested in taking him back to his country of birth. Interestingly, he has spent time with both clubs before.

First, Gomes was in Porto’s youth ranks between 2005 and 2008. He then moved elsewhere before ending up in Benfica’s system in 2011.

Between 2012 and 2014, he made appearances across Benfica’s first team and B team. He left in 2014 with 40 first-team appearances behind him.

Gomes then spent time at Valencia and Barcelona before his Everton move. Now, it could be time for him to return closer to where it all began.

It is not yet clear how much Everton will be able to receive for Gomes. They originally paid more than £20m for his signature, but his stock has likely fallen since.

Even though his contract is due to run until 2024, it may be best for Everton to cut their losses and take what they can for the Portugal international. They need to keep their wage bill efficient and make room for players Lampard may have more use for.
