Everton 'might make big decision' on Frank Lampard future

Journalist Pete O’Rourke says he would be surprised if Everton got rid of Frank Lampard but thinks it is a decision the Goodison Park hierarchy could end up making.

The 43-year-old has not made a great start to life as Everton manager, with his side firmly in a relegation battle.

Under Lampard, the Toffees have won just two Premier League games and lost six, leaving them just outside of the drop zone.

With relegation a real possibility, Everton are said to be thinking about cutting costs ahead of a potential season in the Championship.

According to The Telegraph, the Merseyside club will immediately start cutting costs by £50m if they are relegated in order to avoid a financial fair play penalty.

The same report states, however, that there is unlikely to be a fire sale of players, though it is hard to imagine Everton being able to keep hold of the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison if their biggest fear does become a reality.

While O’Rourke has not ruled out Everton parting ways with Lampard, the insider has told GIVEMESPORT that he would be surprised if the Toffees board did end up wielding the axe so soon after appointing the former Chelsea boss.

Speaking to GMS, he said: “If they don’t see things going right on the field, they might make a decision to change manager, but I’d be surprised if it did happen.

“They obviously went to great efforts to try and persuade Lampard to come to the club to replace Rafa Benitez, well aware of the situation that they’re in – a relegation dogfight.”

While Everton are quite clearly in an ugly situation, they arguably do not need to hit the panic button just yet.
