Everton: Lampard should drop 'sensational' star vs Newcastle

Everton manager Frank Lampard should consider resting Idrissa Gueye for the Toffees’ clash with Newcastle United on Wednesday night, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Gueye returned to Goodison Park during the summer transfer window and has been a mainstay in the starting line-up since.

Lampard confirmed ahead of kick-off at St James’ Park that centre-back Yerry Mina had suffered a setback in his recovery from injury.

However, the former Chelsea boss also had good news, adding that Mason Holgate would be in the squad and that Ben Godfrey had returned to training.

Gueye is likely to play a part once again after he returned to Everton from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer.

Since signing on the dotted line, the 33-year-old has not missed a Premier League game for the Toffees and started four times.

Fellow summer recruit Conor Coady recently piled praise on Gueye, describing the Senegal international as ‘up there with the best’.

Despite impressing since his return, Brown feels that the midweek clash could offer Lampard the chance to rest one of his elder squad members.

The journalist adds that he would like to see James Garner handed an opportunity to prove himself after swapping Manchester United for Everton.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: “You could argue maybe that Idrissa Gueye might not quite be up to playing two, three games a week and probably needs a break every now and then at his age. His form has certainly dipped after the derby when I thought he was sensational and I would like to see Garner get a go really. I think he's got a range of passing and a drive about him that could be really interesting for Everton, so it'll be nice to see him play.”
