Everton: Lampard's reaction to Holgate's pass vs West Ham was telling

Everton are in an almighty mess.

The 2021/22 season has been one to forget for the Merseyside club and if they’re not careful, Championship football awaits them in 2022/23.

After their 2-1 defeat away at West Ham United last Sunday, Everton sit one place above the Premier League relegation zone on 25 points.

Frank Lampard‘s side are just four points ahead of Burnley having now played the same number of games.

The two teams come face-to-face at Turf Moor on Wednesday evening and it’s safe to say the match is a ‘relegation six pointer’.

If Everton lose, you really do fear for them, as their run-in looks incredibly tough on paper.

The problems are continuing to pile up for Lampard. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison aren’t scoring goals, the defence is an absolute mess and the midfield has been decimated by injury.

Mason Holgate had to play in the middle of the park against West Ham after Donny van de Beek picked up an injury in the warm-up.

The former Barnsley man actually scored Everton’s goal at the London Stadium, but his overall performance in an unfamiliar role wasn’t the best.

At one point in the match, Holgate left Lampard looking like a broken man on the touchline after he attempted a line-breaking pass.

The Englishman’s effort was far too powerful with zero accuracy and the Everton boss was not a happy man – to say the least.

Lampard was fuming and it’s easy to understand why. With the team down to 10 men following Michael Keane’s red card, Everton desperately needed some quality from midfield to build an attack.

Instead, Holgate smashed the ball straight off the pitch and we’re still puzzled as to why Anthony Gordon applauded
