Everton demand full explanation after being denied penalty during 2-0 defeat vs Liverpool

Everton are demanding a full explanation from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after being denied a penalty during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

According to The Telegraph, Everton are ‘livid’ that Liverpool defender Joel Matip was not penalised for his challenge on Anthony Gordon in the second half.

Gordon, who was booked for diving in the first half, went down inside the Liverpool box in the 53rd minute.

The score was still 0-0 this point and Everton could have taken the lead had referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot.

But the match official waved play on, much to the Toffees’ fury.

The Independent claim that Everton are more aggrieved with the VAR, Darren England, who they believe dismissed the incident too quickly without checking it properly.

After the match, Everton manager Frank Lampard told Sky Sports: “It was a penalty in the second half. I don’t think you get them here. I think if that is Mo Salah at the other end, he gets the penalty.

“I am not trying to create conflict there, I just think it is the reality of football sometimes. Maybe I have played for clubs sometimes at the top reaches of the league, with the crowd behind them, you get more than you don’t.

“The second one on Anthony is a foul. It is a clear foul. But you don’t get them here.”
