Everton can’t rely on ‘history’ to save them in relegation fight – pundit

Robbie Savage has told Everton that their history of being in the top flight counts for nothing in their fight for Premier League safety.

The Toffees are in real danger of relegation this year after a dismal campaign so far. Defeat at fellow relegation candidates Burnley on Wednesday only added to fears that they could be relegated for the first time in Premier League history.

They started the season under former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez and despite a good start, their form quickly turned around and the Spaniard was sacked in January.

Frank Lampard was appointed as his replacement and the former Chelsea man has done little to change round their fortunes.

They currently sit one point clear of Burnley, who occupy the final relegation spot, but face a number of sides in the top half in their final nine games, starting with Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.

Fixtures against Leicester (twice), Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are all still to come for Lampard’s side meaning that a first ever relegation could be on the cards for the Toffees.

And now, former Leicester and Derby midfielder Savage has urged them not to rely on their history of being a top flight club in the coming weeks, also admitting he thought they are more likely to fall than Burnley,

Writing in his Daily Mirror column, Savage said: “History doesn’t keep you safe from relegation, and right now Everton’s 68-year run in English football’s top flight counts for nothing.

“Tradition, pedigree and huge fan bases didn’t save Newcastle or Aston Villa from the drop in recent seasons. And I’m afraid Everton are not immune to suffering the same fate.
