Evergreen emerge winners of All Stars Unity Cup 2024

It was a befitting end to the final of the second edition of the All Stars Unity Cup competition with newcomer, Evergreen All Stars, emerging the winner of the tournament after defeating another newbie, Araromi FC in the final.

It was a nail-biting final played at the Agidingbi Grammar School field on Saturday, August 31, with the regulation time ending goalless as both sides fight so hard to replace maiden edition winner, Liberty Stars.

Facing penalties, the two sides gave their all with Evergreen triumphing 4-3 to lift the trophy and the N400,000 prize money with their opponent, Araromi going home with N200,000 for their efforts.

Apart from winning the title, Evergreen’s goalkeeper, Oluwasegun Taiwo, was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, while also emerging the Most Valuable Player of the 4-week competition.

Scoring five goals to lead Samba FC to the final four, Henry Mgbemena won the highest goal scorer award of the Unity Cup.

It has been four weekends of intense action with 16 teams starting before the final two leading to Evergreen winning the ultimate prize.

According to Ikenna Anene, the president of Liberty All Stars, the organisers of the Unity Cup, it has been another good outing and plans would commence for the third edition.

“I really want to appreciate all the teams that graced this year’s Unity Cup and I am happy with all the turnouts,” he said.

“As a club, we are going to ruminate on all that we have done this year and also look forward to making it better next year.

“We are grateful to all our sponsors and also looking forward to new people joining us for the third edition and we are hoping to expand it.”
