European wrap: Atletico Madrid return to La Liga summit as Real slip up
Julian Alvarez put Atletico Madrid back on top of La Liga as his side put away a wasteful Athletic Bilbao to seal a vital 1-0 win.
Alvarez slotted home a sharp finish after a neat assist from fellow substitute Marcos Llorente to settle the clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano and nudge his side two points above title rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.
But Athletic will rue a glut of missed chances, including three attempts that hit the woodwork and at least two dreadful misses in fine positions as their 16-match unbeaten streak in the league came to an end.
Real had earlier succumbed 2-1 at Real Betis to undermine their own hopes of regaining top spot. Brahim Diaz put Carlo Ancelotti's side ahead in the 10th minute before Johnny Cardoso headed home from a corner to level the match.
A penalty early in the second half gave Betis a chance to win it and former Los Blancos forward Isco stepped up to convert.
The other two matches finished in draws, Girona and Celta Vigo locked at 2-2 and Dodi Lukebakio securing a 1-1 draw for Sevilla at Rayo Vallecano.
Substitute Philip Billing ensured the battle between Serie A's top two sides finished with honours even.
Leaders Inter looked like taking all three points from their trip to Napoli after Federico Dimarco's precision free-kick handed them the lead midway through the first half. However, the visitors levelled in the 87th minute when Billing converted from close range at the second attempt.
That keeps the gap at a single point in Inter's favour as they look to retain their title.
Third-placed Atalanta missed the chance to make inroads after they were held to a goalless draw at relegation battlers Venezia, while Florian Thauvin's penalty sealed a 1-0 win for Udinese against Parma.
