European Super League reveal relaunch date as Man City and Manchester United watch on

Manchester United and Man City have been informed of a relaunch date for the European Super League (ESL), as the company backing the controversial project have reiterated their desire to change the face of football.

A22 Sports Management have hired Bernd Reichart as their new chief executive in a bid to get the highly controversial ESL off the ground once more. The original launch in April 2021 lasted a matter of days after fans expressed their outrage over the idea of a closed competition of elite teams.

The principles of a tournament that worked on the basis of a coefficient and invitations rather than qualification through sporting merit was rejected by millions of supporters across the world. In England, United and City were joined by Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool to make up half of the 'dirty dozen' of founding teams - as they were so called at the time - before Premier League teams withdrew their interest for the project.

The other six clubs from Europe were made up of AC Milan, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. The ESL is now looking to make a comeback, as Reichart, who spoke to the FT, revealed that the competition is expected to relaunch within the next three years.
