The European Super League fiasco left a dark stain on English football when it came to light one year ago today. Fans across the country protested against the proposals, with Manchester United’s game against Liverpool - a game that was played behind closed doors - forcibly postponed due to supporters storming Old Trafford in anger.

A hasty backtrack and apologetic statements did little to soften the wounds as the consensus is the idea will resurface in a different guise. UEFA have already announced controversial plans to revamp the Champions League in 2024 - a move that was slammed as a Super League ‘by the backdoor’.

Newcastle United had no involvement in the scandal but Amanda Staveley said a meritless competition would ‘damage the entire game’ last year. If the Super League had gone ahead, there is a chance that the £300million Saudi-backed takeover may have been pulled due to the club’s valuation plummeting.
