European Games: Dean Clancy one win from medals and Paris

Dean Clancy is one win away from a medal and place in the Olympics after reaching the quarter-finals at the European Games in Poland.

The Sligo native beat Malik Hasanov of Azerbaijan by split decision, 3-2, in their 63.5kg (lightweight) bout and will face Italy's Gianluigi Malanga in the last four.

"I'm absolutely buzzing at the moment," he said.

"The job is not finished though, I’ve one more to qualify, that’s the first goal of mine."

It is Clancy's second win of the week after he beat Austria's Arsen Chabyan 5-0 in the last 32.

Dean Walsh, who turns 29 today, fights Italy's Salvatore Cavallaro in the last 32 at 6.45pm.

Elsewhere at the games, Ireland's Rugby 7s side beat hosts Poland 66-0 and Jack Fairclough finished 29th in Men’s Skeet qualification with a season's best-equalling score of 118.

"I finished on 118 which is a good enough score," Fairclough.

"The standard at these multi-sport events is so high that you really can't afford to make any silly mistakes…It’s all a learning experience."
