Euro round-up: Golden Lion tamed by Lille as Martinique minnows are thumped 12-0 in cup clash

Martinique side Golden Lion suffered a humbling 12-0 defeat by Lille in the French Cup on Saturday midway through an 8,000-mile round trip to play the match.

Golden Lion, the champions of Martinique and one of several overseas teams from the French territories to enter the Cup, were drawn against Ligue 1 Lille in the round of 64 and their journey began on Wednesday with a direct flight to Paris.

Three days later, they were no match for Lille, however, as Jonathan David and Edon Zhegrova bagged hat-tricks in a crushing victory for the hosts ahead of Lion's long journey home.

Golden Lion qualified for the tournament as reigning champions of the Caribbean nation, and were 7-0 down at half-time and mustered a single shot in comparison to 37 for the hosts.

The Coupe de France has been open to representatives of French departments and territories since the mid-1960s, and one-sided results are nothing new.

Golden Lion can seek solace in the fact that they performed better – and faced a shorter round trip – than French Guiana side CSC Cayenne, who were thumped 14-0 at Paris FC in 2021.

In Serie A, Inter moved five points clear at the top of the table with a 2-1 victory over Verona, while Fiorentina missed out on a chance to move inside the top three as they lost 1-0 to Sassuolo.

Monza enjoyed a 3-2 away win at Frosinone, while Lecce and Cagliari played out a 1-1 draw.
