Euro 2022: Georgia Stanway predicts England's toughest opponents

Following England men’s historic run at Euro 2020, the Lionesses will be hoping to make an impact this summer when they host the Women’s Euros.

It was announced earlier this week that Arsenal defender Leah Williamson will captain her country at the tournament in July.

While this is one major decision out of the way, England manager Sarina Wiegman still has the unenviable job of selecting her squad from the pool of incredible talent.

One player who will be hoping for a spot on the roster is Manchester City’s Georgia Stanway.

At this moment in time, each position is well stacked for the Lionesses. Thanks to Wiegman’s belief in younger players, England boast incredible depth all over the pitch.

Almost no player is guaranteed a place in the Euro 2022 squad. The healthy competition for a spot in the international camp is tougher than it’s ever been and it’s almost impossible to predict who Wiegman will select this summer.

Stanway is very much in the running, having become an England regular over the last few years thanks to her influential performances at club level.

The Man City star discussed her journey to the very top as part of McDonald’s Fun Football sessions, an initiative created to provide free football for young children.

“I used to kick a ball around on the sideline when I was four watching my brother,” she said, reflecting on her grassroots experience. “He played for a boys’ team called Furness Rovers. One day they just asked if I wanted to play. I jumped straight in and never looked back.”

In 2015, Stanway joined Man City and quickly rose into the spotlight. Since making her senior debut, she has won the Women’s Super League title, three FA Cups, and three league cups with the Citizens.
