England: Sue Smith 'truly believes' Lionesses can win Euro 2022

The countdown is on to Euro 2022 and the burning question is being asked: Can England win their first European Championship title?

The Lionesses will host the 13th edition of the tournament, with fixtures being played across the country before the final at Wembley.

Former England international Sue Smith discussed the chances of Sarina Wiegman’s side making history on home soil.

Since the appointment of the former Netherlands manager, the Lionesses are yet to lose a single match.

Huge wins in the World Cup Qualifiers allowed Wiegman to rotate her squad and give young players a chance to prove themselves. Talents like Ella Toone and Alessia Russo have been given crucial opportunities in the starting lineup, and the faith has been repaid in abundance.

The Manchester United duo are now regular regular starters for their country, paving the way for a new era of young Lionesses breaking into the senior team.

The depth of this England squad is something Smith believes could take the team all the way to the top.

“The competition for places now is high, the squad is in great shape,” the Soccer Saturday pundit told GiveMeSport Women. “There’s so many good players who aren’t even selected.”

Smith, who earned 93 caps for the Lionesses, is no stranger to the pressures of competing for a spot on the international roster.
