Ethiopia's Gotytom Gebreslase wins women's marathon at World Champs, as Jess Piasecki first over the line for GB

Ethiopia'a Gotytom Gebreslase has won the women's marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States. She finished in a new championship record of 2:18:11.

Judith Korir of Kenya, who was locked in with Gebreslase for much of the race, took second, finishing in 2:18:18. Israel's Lonah Salpeter took bronze in 2:20.

Just before the 41km mark, Gebreslase broke away from Korir with a clinical surge of pace, allowing her to take the title in a lifetime best marathon time.

Jess Piasecki was the first over the line for Great Britain, after toughing out a hard race. The 32-year-old started strong and was on for a PB time up until 25-30km, where she began to tire. Things became really tough for Piasecki during the last 5km, where she slowed down considerably – to around eight min/miles – but she displayed great grit and determination to solider on and safely cross the finish line.

GB's Charlotte Purdue and Rose Harvey both dropped out of the race, with Purdue coming to a halt at 19km and Harvey at 25km, who was suffering with cramps.
