Erling Haaland transfer should not lead to Gabriel Jesus Man City departure

Even if Gabriel Jesus hadn't just given the perfect reminder of his quality by grabbing four goals in a single game on Saturday, Manchester City shouldn't let him go this summer if they don't have to.

There has been increasing speculation over the past week about Jesus' future at City — with the Brazilian reportedly wanting to leave to get a regular starting berth elsewhere. He has been at City since he was just a teenager, moving to England in January 2017, and even then his quality was clear as he was groomed to be Sergio Aguero's replacement.

Jesus regularly displayed flashes of brilliance and kept up a decent goal tally during his first years with the club, but was playing second fiddle to the iconic Argentine, a role he performed with an admirable lack of fuss and complaint. Yet, when the time came for Jesus to finally take his destined spot, he couldn't live up to what Aguero brought to the side. Who would? Well, Erling Haaland just might.

Jesus has been City's only natural striker for the past two years, with Aguero sidelined through injury for the vast majority of his final campaign. And when finally relied upon to be the goal-getter in chief, he just couldn't quite make the step up.

He got nine goals in the Premier League last season, with a further five in cup competitions. This year he'd scored just three league goals before Watford came to town.
