Erling Haaland told he can break Premier League goals record after Man City hat-trick vs Manchester United

Erling Haaland continued to smash records on Sunday when he inspired Manchester City to a thumping 6-3 win against Manchester United in the 188th Manchester derby.

Haaland scored a hat-trick for the third Premier League home game in a row - becoming the first player in the competition's history to do so - and set up two goals for Phil Foden who also bagged himself a treble.

The 22-year-old striker has now scored 14 goals in eight league appearances this season; if he carries on scoring at the same rate then he will score 66 goals this campaign. The current goals record for a 38-game Premier League season is 32, set by Mohamed Salah in 2017/18.

It's taken Haaland just eight Premier League matches to score three hat-tricks, also a league record. The previous record for the fewest games to score three hat-tricks in the competition was held by Michael Owen who achieved the feat in 48 outings.

Speaking on Premier League productions after City's win, Owen made the point that now it's already time we started looking at the big records that Haaland could break, including Alan Shearer's all-time leading Premier League goals tally of 260.

"You talk about all the records he's breaking now, but what about the long-term record?" Owen said.

"He's hundreds away from it but it's so realistic because of the rate at which he's scoring at the moment. The Alan Shearer record has got to be in doubt, got to be an attainable target already - how are we saying that when he's only been at the club a couple of months!"

While it's still very early days for Haaland at City, it's difficult to imagine him experiencing anything remotely close to a goal drought
