Erling Haaland: Man City striker isn't outright leader for European Golden Shoe

Erling Haaland scored yet again for Manchester City as they beat Southampton 4-0 on Saturday.

The Norwegian grabbed his 20th goal of the season in all competitions – although failed to score a fourth consecutive home Premier League hat-trick.

The goal took Haaland’s league tally to 15 in nine appearances. Quite stupendous.

The City man remains seven goals clear of Harry Kane in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot with the Tottenham striker also scoring in their win against Brighton.

While Haaland already has one hand on the Golden Boot in England’s top-flight, there’s one accolade that he’s not clear in.

We’re talking about the European Golden Shoe.

The European Golden Shoe is the award given to the leading goalscorer in league matches from the top division of a European league.

The current holder is Robert Lewandowski, while Lionel Messi has claimed the award on six occasions.

However, the trophy isn’t necessarily dished out to the player who scores the most goals. That’s because there’s a scoring system.

Goals scored in the top five leagues according to the UEFA coefficients list are multiplied by two, goals scored in the leagues ranked 6 to 22 are multiplied by 1.5, and goals scored in leagues ranked 22 and below are multiplied by one. It means goals scored in higher ranked leagues will count for more than those scored in weaker leagues.

And while Haaland currently leads the way, he’s actually level on points with a certain Amahl Pellegrino, who plays for Bodo/Glimt.

Haaland’s 15 Premier League goals have given him 30 points, while Pellegrino’s 20 strikes have been multiplied by 1.5 to also give him 30 points.
