Erling Haaland makes Karim Benzema comparison as he outlines Man City ambition

Erling Haaland has revealed that one of his main motivations for joining Manchester City was his desire to improve and develop as a player.

City ended their hunt for a new striker this summer when they signed Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £51million. The 22-year-old has made a fine start to life at the Etihad Stadium, scoring three goals in his first three Premier League games including a brace on his debut.

City fought hard with Real Madrid to win the striker's signature, as the Spanish giants were widely believed to be the frontrunners to sign him. Haaland ultimately chose City, with the opportunity to work with Pep Guardiola and some of the best players in the world too good to turn down.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, he opened up on how he sees his City career panning out, citing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema as an example of what he wants to achieve.

"I don’t know what will happen, but it must always be about learning, about developing," Haaland said. "You can never stop looking for new ways to become better. Look at Karim Benzema at Real Madrid. He's 34 now, and suddenly he’s developed into an even better player over the last couple of years – that's insanely good. I want to always do that."

Some City fans might be slightly uncomfortable with Haaland namechecking Benzema, given the speculation and rumours that Haaland could well fancy a move to the Bernabeu after a few years at City.

However, fans can be assured that Haaland is fully focused on the task at hand; scoring goals, winning games and trophies at City but above all else improving and becoming the best striker he can possibly be.
