Erling Haaland has proved why we could be about to see the best of Kevin De Bruyne at Man City

Erling Haaland's home debut for Manchester City did not pan out as he probably dreamt it might, but he showed exactly how he can make an impact even when he doesn't score.

City cruised to a 4-0 win against Bournemouth on a balmy Saturday afternoon at the Etihad Stadium, with the absence of a first home goal for Haaland the only thing stopping the day from being a perfect one.

From minute one City looked in total control, with Ilkay Gundogan breaking the deadlock after 19 minutes. Before long Kevin De Bruyne had doubled City's advantage with a brilliant solo goal and Phil Foden had slotted home to all but seal the win.

Ultimately, supporters hoping to see Haaland perform his signature meditation celebration after scoring in front of his adoring fans for the first time were left disappointed. The closest the 22-year-old got was a poor attempt to convert a cut-back from Jack Grealish, the summer signing scuffing his effort wide before turning and seeing his number on the fourth official's substitution board.

Haaland looked a little frustrated as he hugged his replacement, Julian Alvarez, and took his seat on the bench, but he needn't had been. Everyone knows he can score goals, but against Bournemouth, he showed his critics - and more importantly Pep Guardiola - that he can do the other things expected of him in a Pep team.

Much has been made of the supposed weaknesses in Haaland's build-up play, but Gundogan's opener was only possible thanks to a superb piece of hold-up play from the Norwegian. Haaland did well to occupy two defenders, keep control of the ball and slip Gundogan through on goal while falling to the ground.
