Erik ten Hag urged to change profile of Manchester United transfer targets

Former Manchester United striker Quinton Fortune insists the club should place a focus on recruiting players with the correct attitude during this summer's transfer window.

Huge changes are expected to take place at Old Trafford over the coming weeks, as new manager Erik ten Hag looks to try and put his own stamp of authority on the squad. United have already said farewell to the likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, while others are expected to follow them through the exit door.

Their departures mean that United are certain to bring in fresh blood, with several positions in need of strengthening this summer. It is understood that bolstering the centre-back and central-midfield berths are among the club's top priorities.

United, as always, are already being linked with a huge number of players around the world. But there is a feeling that they need to change their recruitment style to avoid repeating the costly mistakes that have been made in recent years.

And for former midfielder Fortune — who played for United between 1999 and 2006 — it is important that Ten Hag brings in players of the right character.

"I have thought about that and it's a good question," Fortune told United's club website, when asked who the club should be targeting this summer. "It doesn't have to be big names. It's got to be the right characters to fit into the culture of Manchester United.

"That is the thing to achieve again. It is very important. Not every single player will have to be better to coach but the humility bit is what has got United so much success.
