Erik ten Hag transfer policy critics are missing the point in Manchester United debate

'Stick to what you know best' is something that football coaches often tell young players. Don't go too far outside your comfort zone; the further you go the more likely you are to encounter uncertainty and potentially fail.

This is a sentiment that Erik ten Hag seems to take to heart during his first window with Manchester United. A high percentage of the club's main transfer targets all have an affiliation with the Dutchman's now-former club Ajax.

Frenkie de Jong, Jurrien Timber, Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Christian Eriksen are all Ajax players of the past or present, so they will be well aware of how Ten Hag wants to play and will make it easier for him to implement his system at Old Trafford. Some United fans have, however, raised the issue that if the manager was to fail at United, these players might not suit another manager — an issue that has plagued United in the past.

But there might be more to it than just 'Ten Hag trusts them'. United are in a precarious situation; it seems that the goodwill they have been running on in the transfer market for the past few years has started to run out, as they are no longer seen as the premium destination in England.

Add to this the fact United are not in the Champions League next season, are trying to implement a more sensible wage structure and also have now garnered a reputation as something of graveyard for young talent, then it makes it difficult for the club to attract players. So why not utilise the allure of playing under Ten Hag instead?
