Erik ten Hag set for key role in Manchester United transfer negotiations

Ralf Rangnick had advised incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to throw himself into negotiations with prospective signings.

United's failure to qualify for the Champions League is expected to impact their pulling power in the summer transfer market as it did in 2019, when they were reduced to recruiting Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire from Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City for £150million. None of them have been an outright success.

Interim manager Rangnick stressed Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola are heavily involved in persuading targets to join their clubs. United gazumped City to sign Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo in the last three years, while Jose Mourinho convinced Romelu Lukaku to join United over Chelsea in 2017.

Mindful of their stock, United are believed to be targeting certain players who are not generating intense interest from the Premier League's top three but Rangnick believes Ten Hag should be involved in selling United to targets.

When asked if esteemed players would still want to join United, Rangnick replied: "As a club, with regards to supporters, stadium, quality of training ground, I would say yes.

"But we also have to be realistic, as soon as other clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City are involved, then you need some good reasons, and somebody needs to explain to the players and that is why it is important what Erik thinks.
