Erik ten Hag sent sack warning after latest Manchester United defeat

Questions will soon be asked about Erik ten Hag's position as Manchester United manager if results don't improve, according to former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given.

The Reds were beaten 3-0 by Newcastle United in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night as their defence of the trophy ended with a whimper. First-half goals from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall put the visitors in charge before Joe Willock made the result safe in the second period.

It continues a poor start to the season for Ten Hag and United with the latest defeat their eighth in 15 games so far this term. And the result ratchets up the pressure on the Dutchman ahead of a Premier League trip to Fulham on Saturday and a must-win Champions League tie in Copenhagen next week.

United are entering a pivotal period and Given, who was in the Sky Sports studio as a pundit for the Newcastle game, believes the United board could be considering Ten Hag's position.

"They have spent £411million, you can talk about the previous managers and say you have to give him time and that he has to get his own players, but that is his team we are looking at," said Given. "They were poor against Manchester City. He made quite a few changes tonight to freshen it up and give these guys an opportunity and they were poor again tonight and where do you go from here?

"Gary (Neville) mentioned that Ten Hag has got a lot of thinking to do over the next couple of days but do the board and directors have a lot of thinking to do? I think they will but I don't know. You can see the fans turning to the dugout and standing up,
