Erik ten Hag's best Manchester United signing showed his quality in 10-minute debut appearance

Among the sea of black and white on Wembley Way on Sunday afternoon, there were visible dashes of yellow and green. The national flag of Brazil was draped around a few Newcastle fans, in a show of support for Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

The two Newcastle stars were always going to have to deliver exceptional individual performances for their club's 54-year wait for a trophy to end against Manchester United.

Instead, the pair were outdone by their fellow countryman, Casemiro, and the Brazilian flags at the Newcastle end were lowered. The world's best defensive midfielder performed on the biggest stage and he made a statement to the pretenders.

The 31-year-old does not speak fluent English but the tone of his message, spoken in Portuguese, was not difficult to understand in the mixed zone after the game. "I left a great club, came to England and people wondered why,” Casemiro said.

“Moments like these are the answer. We all know this is only the beginning, but it doesn't mean we can't be happy. It's one more trophy for me and I always welcome it, regardless of the competition. I celebrated a lot because I'm enjoying it here."

Casemiro is a serial winner and it's certainly not a coincidence United have ended their longest run without a trophy for over 40 years just six months after his arrival from Real Madrid, a club where he won every major trophy possible.
