Erik ten Hag might have a £109.9m decision to make at Manchester United this summer

It was on Friday, July 23, 2021, that Manchester United finally brought one of the most long-running transfer sagas to an end.

After being linked with a move to just about every big-name club across Europe, Jadon Sancho arrived at Old Trafford for an eye-watering £72.9million fee. The winger had excelled during his four-year stint in Germany, scoring 50 goals and racking up 64 assists in 137 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

He had established himself as one of the most sought-after players in world football. Clubs were queuing up to lay their hands on him and it felt as though United were incredibly lucky to have won the race for his signature.

Almost two years on, you could be forgiven for not actually realising that United had signed him. He has scored just 12 goals and grabbed six assists in 79 outings for the club so far, meaning the Reds have not seen anything remotely close to a return on their investment.

Sancho arrived at Old Trafford dubbed as the answer to United's long-term right-wing issues. They were in desperate need of fresh blood in that area of the team and the winger, who missed out on a place in England's World Cup squad last year, appeared as though he was the best candidate to fill that void after scoring 16 goals and grabbing 20 assists in his final season at Dortmund.

However, for one reason or another, Sancho's United career has failed to work out. Apart from a fruitful spell on the left-wing during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign under Ralf Rangnick, the former Manchester City youngster has failed to inspire United's supporters, many of whom have run of patience with him.
