Erik ten Hag makes Raphael Varane admission amid Manchester United fitness issues

Erik ten Hag has revealed that Raphael Varane has been undergoing his own individual training programme this summer in order to address his Manchester United fitness issues.

The 29-year-old struggled for game time in his debut campaign at the club, only featuring in 28 of a possible 47 matches due to a combination of injury and illness.

Despite his regular absence from the side, World Cup winner Varane is still regarded by many as the most talented centre-back at the club and will be looking for regular playing time this season.

Ten Hag's fortunes could rely on keeping the French international fit over the coming campaign and he revealed that special measures have been introduced to try and keep Varane fit for as long as possible.

When asked if he was confident he could solve the defender's long-term issues, he told reporters: "100 per cent convinced by that. We built him during pre-season really carefully (with) an individual programme. The last three weeks, I think, every session he is on the pitch and I am really happy with that.

"You see him growing, his fitness levels, his performance levels. So I am really happy with that. In the moment Raphael will be fit. It is a huge strength for the squad and for the team."
