Erik ten Tag is happy to work around Cristiano Ronaldo's style of play at Manchester United - if he stays at Old Trafford this summer.

The new Red Devils boss has yet to spend any time with Ronaldo since taking up his post, as the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has been absent from United's pre-season tour due to "family reasons." But with Ronaldo also handing in a bombshell transfer request just days before the squad jetted off to the other side of the world, Ten Hag doesn't know if he'll ever work with him.

However, as the 37-year-old and agent Jorge Mendes scramble around Europe to find a suitor, the Dutch tactician is ready and waiting to fit Ronaldo - who he says is "not for sale" - into his team. Asked about how he'd get the best of the Portuguese superstar if his transfer saga ends in him staying at Old Trafford, Ten Hag declared: "The players dictate the way you play, especially players who score goals because they are extremely important for a team. You construct your team around them."

During Ralf Rangnick's disastrous tenure as Red Devils interim manager, it was reported that Ronaldo took it upon himself to request that the German coach change United's formation to one in which another striker would partner him.
