Erik ten Hag has four selection decisions to make for Manchester United vs Tottenham

Erik ten Hag is learning more about his Manchester United squad as the weeks unravel and he has got a number of selection decisions to make for his next game.

Tottenham visit Old Trafford looking to avenge March’s 3-2 defeat when Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show with a hat-trick. Both teams have evolved since then, one playing in the Champions League and the other not.

Spurs are seven points ahead of United going into the contest albeit have played a game more. But United’s defeat of Liverpool and Arsenal on home soil this season makes it hard to determine which team is favourite.

Both go into the match on the back of four-game unbeaten runs having won three of those. United had to settle for a goalless draw with Newcastle on Sunday in a frustrating outing.

It will have prompted Ten Hag to mull over who he lines up at 8.15pm on Wednesday. Luke Shaw is the in-form left-back having played the full 90 minutes in his last two starts.

Tyrell Malacia offers something different but after a strong beginning to the campaign is now going through a rough patch. His last two starts have ended with substitutions.

Christian Eriksen missed the Newcastle match through illness and wasn’t spotted in United’s latest training session. If he is still unwell then Ten Hag will have to choose between Fred and Scott McTominay to start, most likely the latter after the former’s fruitless performance against the Magpies.

It’s hoped Anthony Martial will be ready in time for Tottenham. Ten Hag hinted he could be included on Sunday but he was nowhere to be seen in the matchday squad.

He must assess whether the Frenchman is fit enough to start
